Heavenly Lilies

"Heavenly Lilies," a multimedia work by Suzanne Fernandez, offers a beautiful visual meditation on our journey from earthly beginnings toward heavenly fulfillment.

The lilies rise from the earth, their leaves treated with gold and glitter, appearing almost like steps ascending toward the blossoms above. What begins rooted in the soil reaches upward toward light, beauty, and completion. The imagery speaks of transformation — of the earthly yearning for the eternal and the bride being drawn toward her heavenly home.

This week's reflection is inspired by Song of Songs 2:3 and the beautiful image of the bride resting beneath the "grace-shadow" of her beloved. There she finds shelter, nourishment, delight, and ultimately a place where she can blossom.

There is something profound in that image. A flower does not struggle to become beautiful. It receives what it needs. It receives the earth beneath it, the rain that nourishes it, and the sunlight toward which it naturally grows. Perhaps our spiritual transformation happens in much the same way.

We rest in the presence of Christ. We receive His grace. We allow His love to nourish what He has planted within us. And sometimes almost imperceptibly, we begin to change.

The roots of our lives remain for a time in earthly soil — among ordinary responsibilities, struggles, disappointments, hopes, and unanswered questions. Yet our ultimate destination is not the soil.

We were created to blossom.

We were created for communion with God.

And we were created for a glory that does not fade.

"Heavenly Lilies" reminds us that what God begins in hidden places can eventually emerge into beauty. The earthly reaches toward the heavenly. The natural reaches toward the divine. And the bride reaches toward her Bridegroom.

Perhaps the painting leaves us with one simple question:

"What is beginning to blossom in me as I rest beneath the grace-shadow of Christ?"

May we continue growing toward the Light.
